Tunisia: South gas project to be launched next year

Tunisian Industry Minister, Mohamed Lamine Chakhari said the South Tunisia gas project will allow supplying all parts of the country with natural gas in 2014, revealing that Tunisia has agreed with the company "Shell" to build the South pipeline next year.

The agreement has not yet been signed, but this will not stop Shell to start works in 2013, despite the challenges the company faces.

The minister said, Thursday, during his hearing before the Committee on Energy and Production Sectors, that the available quantities of gas (about 4 million cubic meters in the south) allow Tunisia to be self -sufficient, stressing the need to move towards the production of renewable energy.

It should be reminded that British Gas is the main investor in the gas sector in Tunisia, specifically in Sfax.
