Biya says 40% per cent of Cameroonians live in poverty
PANA
Poverty affects 40 per cent of Cameroonians, President Paul Biya said Wednesday evening in a radio and television address on the eve of Youth Day, observed yearly on 11 Feb. in the country.
"This inequality, which affects all aspects of life - food, health, education, living conditions - is unacceptable in a society which puts human dignity among its top values," the Cameroonian leader said.
He said "notable efforts" had been made over the past few years to reduce povert y, and called on Cameroonian youths to show "stronger and sustained commitment" to overcome po verty.
Biya also called on the youths to meet the challenge of "food shortage, which no t long ago led to unrest across the world."
"Normally, our country, whose farming vocation is obvious, should not be affected. And yet we import large quantities of rice, maize and other cereals we can grow, which threatens the balance of our foreign trade," he said.
President Biya announced that he would thoroughly look into the issue by developing rice and maize farming, boosting plantain farming and promoting other food crops.
He urged Cameroonian youths to take part in the green revolution which will "not only feed the people, but also sell abundant food to neighbouring countries".
