Six pre-qualified for privatisation of Nigeria's telecoms firm

Another attempt to privatise the state-run Nigerian Tele communications Plc (NITEL) will receive a boost 16 Feb when the country's privatisation agency opens the fi nancial bid for the acquisition of 75% shares in the firm.
The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has shortlisted six out of the 14 pre-qua lified consortia for the process, following the closure of the submission of technical and financial proposals 5 Feb. 2010.
According to BPEâ?s Head of Public Communications, Mr. Chigbo Anichebe, the suc cessful bidders are Brymedia (WA) Ltd; AF21/ Spectrum Consortium; MTN Nigeria Communication Ltd; Globacom Nigeria Ltd; Omen International Ltd (BVI) and New Generation Teleco-mmunications Ltd.
BPE had published the advertisement for expressions of interest from prospective investors for the acquisition of at least 75 per cent equity in Nitel locally a n d internationally in July 2009.
The 14 consortia that were pre-qualified paid a non-refundable fee of US$25,000 for access to the data room and bidding documents and executed the confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement.
Previous attempts to privatise the former telecommunications monopoly and its mo bile arm M-tel, failed.
